It’s been two weeks since my lady friend(LF) and I along with the pizza and Chinese delivery guys(aka num and nuts) saw the “Angel of New York” in Central Park. We’ve gone back to the exact spot more times than I care to admit. Plus we’ve scoured the park from 110th Street to 59th–

My LF is digging her nails into my neck as I type this, and she thinks she’s hurting me but it feels guuuud!!!

–and no matter how much we want to say we saw or even felt something out of the ordinary since then, we can’t. I speak for everyone when I say–

Owwww!

–We’ve seen nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing! Nada!

Everything has been pretty normal. So that’s it. That’s all I have to say. End of post.

Good night. Good luck.

Bald Punk

–

I’m laughing, loud, too. Geeze, I do everything loud. The three of them are standing over my shoulder. If I was to turn and look at num and nuts–especially since my LF is still digging her nails into my neck–I would see two faces that look like they’re out of a 1950′s sci-fi movie; when an apocalypse didn’t seem as complicated. Those are my favorite sci-fi movies.

Okay–

Mf LF wants me to tell you about this guy we met the other evening. We went to Murph’s. It’s the bar I told you about inside the South Street Seaport Mall.

Murphs

We were seated on an outside bench with a view to where the East River meets NY Harbor. When you’re there you can’t help but daydream about the countless ships of all shapes and sizes that have passed through since even before Henry Hudson. Sometimes I swear I can see a ghostly vessel. We’ll chat about that another time.

So this guy overheard me and my LF talking about Grace, the Angel of NY. My LF is good at modulation. I’m not, and it’s not my fault that I’m loud. It’s my lungs. Pretty sure ’bout that. Pretty sure.

Oh—num and nuts were there, and if they spoke, I can’t remember. I grew up with people yelling at me, in school and at home, so I’m exceptional at tuning crap out.

We never mentioned Grace by name or anything, so I have no idea what he picked up on. My LF just reminded me that the guy lives in the San Remo. At Murph’s we had mentioned the San Remo. We had been across the street from the building when we had seen Grace in Central Park. But I still have no idea how he connected the dots.

He was silver-haired, tanned, a middle-aged gentleman–with a nice white smile and an interesting manner of speaking. Maybe he was in his mid-50s, but he talked like an old black-and-white movie actor. In a nutshell, he was the kind of guy who dazzles the old ladies.

So he leans over and says, “You know Grace?” He had the happy-diamond-gleam in his eye of a wealthy man.

The first thing I did was raise my hand before my LF could speak. She was all set to tell our complete history, vols. 1-99, probably more because she was on her second bay breeze. I took the guy back down to square zero with a brash, “What’s going on guy?”

“I overhead your conversation about Grace,” his voice lowered as he spoke with an air of respect, “the Angel of New York.”

I was expressionless–about to give this guy the send-off, but my LF nods. Now I couldn’t stop her from nodding, though I wanted to smack num and nuts. Because once she started, they were like bobbleheads. Those two live to mimic her every emotion and gesture. Lord help me. Plus they would have thrown me off the mall’s third story deck and into the filthy East River if she said so. (Someone is nodding behind me.)

I squinted and puckered and looked this guy straight in the eye. I asked his name. He said it was Theodore Clack. Then we all intro’d ourselves. I winced when num and nuts did, because when they talk, I always feel like they’re two big birds chirping and flapping their wings.

“Grace is very ephemeral,” Mr. Clack said, “most people are lucky to get one good look like you guys did.”

“How did she get the moniker, Angel of NY?” my LF asked, who has a nice way of doing and saying things and who everyone really likes.

Clack raised his brows. “She’s been part of NYC for a long time,” he said and then cut me off as I began to speak. He said the next round was on him.

I stood up and the two of us went to the Vino Bar. It was closer to where we were sitting than Murphs, plus Mr. Clack wanted wine. I walked back with our bevos, and when Clack returned, he had a 16oz cup of wine sans ice.

It was then I noticed my LF was surprisingly reticent. She’s way more into supernatural stuff than I am. I basically want to get away from it. She’s the opposite. She had noticed something very bad about Mr. Clack.

I joked about how we saw Grace, the supposed Angel of NY. I said she was scurrying around in the bushes inside Central Park. “Don’t you think if there was really such an angel, she’d be sitting pretty on the top of some skyscraper, just watching, taking it all in, waiting to do whatever angels do.”

“Grace is here for the dead,” Mr. Clack said with a hint of zeal. “Lore has it that she leads them over a refulgent white marble bridge to the world of the dead. I’ve also heard her called a pathmaker. Though I can’t say exactly what that is.”

“Everything has to be neat and simple for him,” my LF said about muah, you know num and nuts nodded.

I laughed yet could tell something still wasn’t right with her, but I kept yacking. “At best,” I said, lifting my gaze to a helicopter, which pass in greater numbers than boats do on the East River. ”I saw a blurry figure, maybe it was a ghost. Now you want me to believe that she’s an angel who leads the dead over the River Styx.”

“She seemed to have had matronly garb on,” my LF said.

“Too dark for me to see clothes,” I said.

“I have this feeling her origins were in the New Netherlands,” my LF said.

Clack nodded, his eyes very tight on my LF. It was at this time that I sensed a little tension between him and my LF.

“Lore says Grace has been around since the Dutch settled on Manhattan, maybe earlier,” Clack said. “While I’ve heard she was born through Anneke Bogardus, an early Dutch settler.”

“Have you heard of Max Beckley?” my LF asked, while sipping on her second bay breeze of the evening. She was getting a little tipsy and seemed to relax a little.

“You know about Grace, you gotta know about Max?” I added and took a perfect sip of my beer, one that left a nice beer mustache. It’s great being a guy.

Mr. Clack paled just a bit. “She can’t help him–he’s not really dead,” he said.

“How do you know all this?” my LF asked.

“An old sage told me,” Clack said.

“Benny, ‘the cigar store Indian!’” I blurted. “That’s who you mean.”

Clack laughed as a really nice family took up next to us. They all leaned against the railing. From there our conversation turned very tame. Though Clack did tell us that he lives in the San Remo apartment, and that he was certain we’d meet again.

Overall Clack was super-duper to talk to. The only chip in his armor was that it seemed by the amount of wine he had, two 16oz cups, that he was trying to escape something . . .

My LF is whispering into my ear. She just walked away. So did num and nuts. She just told me he had the mark of the devil in his eye.

I was all over the City this past Sunday.

Canal Street was bumper to bumper traffic. The sidewalks were packed. If you looked away for a half-sec, you risked being trampled underfoot. When I headed uptown, all the bars on West Broadway had their doors flung open and music filled the air. Thompson Street was a little shady and creepy, but serene all the same as it tends to be.

Thompson Street

(All photos by Bald Punk)

I came to W 4th St. and headed into Washington Square Park. It was filled with the usual suspects, along with droves of cheery and fresh NYU coeds. Many students were with their parents as they took in the sights and sounds. It was the day before the start of another school year.

Up on E 14th St. in Union Square Park, they were having humongous Hummus Party! I kid you not. Sabra Foods had tents set up in front of the George Washington on Horseback statue. People handed out samples of different kinds of hummus. I had about three dozen samples. They were guuuud!

Park Avenue was placid. It verged on ghostly. So quiet, it put me on “even ground.” That’s when I took the last pics of the Chrysler Building for you.

Afterwards, I walked up Lexington Ave and then across E 59th St. I made my way into Central Park. There were plenty of horse drawn carriages in the area. The place smelled of manure.

The surrounding buildings were majestic. They seemed to reflect some unseen element of the park. The park itself was as welcoming a sight as any of NYC’s iconic destinations.

I was meeting my lady friend(LF). We were going to the AMC Theaters in Lincoln Center to see Inglourious Basterds. (It’s too complicated to explain why we didn’t go to the Ziegfeld Theater to see it instead.)

I zigzagged my way through the park and came out on Central Park West. I spotted my LF across from the Society For Ethical Culture building. She was seated on a bench by the stone wall that encompasses the entire park.

To my mild surprise, the pizza and Chinese delivery guys(aka num and nuts) were with her. Earlier my LF and I had had a little disagreement on whether to see the early or the late show. She wanted to wait for them to get off work. So it seemed they both must have gotten off work early.

Seated on the edge of the next bench over was Benny, “the cigar store Indian.” His eyes were alight as he seemed to be telling num and nuts–who were motioning like happy parakeets— one of his far-out tales. To refrain from yelling at Benny, I bit down on my lower lip.

He already has my LF under his thumb. She loves him and his crazy reincarnation and ghost stories. Until now he had kept away the pizza and Chinese delivery guys. I was under the impression he did so as a favor to me, because they are totally whacked, and he knows that his crazy stories would drive them to run off cliffs and shit. And I don’t need that mess.

In close unison, all four turned. Only my LF clearly acknowledged me. She got right up and came to me.

I stopped and leered at Benny.

“Why don’t you come and sit?” she asked.

“No way,” I said.

“Benny wants to show us something.”

“Absolutely not,” I said, lifting my gaze to the park, then back to the buildings. All around us the sun’s sheen was giving way to softer and darker hues. The gloaming hour had started. “Let’s go see the movie.”

“After,” my LF said, distractedly. In her eyes, I saw the light of admiration for the coming darkness. She loves the change, especially because she swears you can feel it–in and around Central Park.

“I’ll wait here,” I said, having an idea where Benny would lead them.

“It won’t take long,” she said and gave a nearly imperceptible nod.

The four of them headed up Central Park West. I followed them, a half-block behind. They sauntered past the Dakota Apartment on 72nd Street. They plopped down a block later on a bench across from the San Remo building.

San Remo

It was where I thought they’d stop.

For a long time, I’ve had a love-ignore relationship with the San Remo. It’s one of the most appealing buildings that frame the park.

About a year or so ago when I was passing in front of it during the early evening, I peered into its open doors and had the feeling I was setting my sights upon the “past.” It was probably because of all the marble and ornate design. Yet I also couldn’t deny an odd sensation in my viscera. I had felt an indeterminate puff push through my chest.

I looked on ahead. Benny was leaning over the wall. He gazed into the park. He must have said something because the three of them joined him. Where they stood, it’s a bit of a drop on the other side of the wall.

They all seemed to be on the lookout for someone.

Whenever the heavier Avenue traffic had the stoplight, I heard all sorts of odd noises that I couldn’t place. I moved closer and found myself looking for whatever Benny had to show.

By now the sheen of sun was completely replaced by the grit of coming darkness. The change was palatable. ”It was soft” is all I can say, real soft.

“She’s here. She’s here.” Benny said a few times, whispering with a sense of urgency. “Look!”

The bushes remained still though a fleeting black figure slipped through making a gentle shhhhh sound. It was out of sight before I could get a good look. I turned to my friends.

My LF’s eyes gleamed like stars, while num- and-nuts’ seemed to spin cartoonishly like tops, and they moved in slow dance steps like they had to pee.

”Who was that?” I asked Benny in wonderment.

“Grace,” he said breathlessly, his face alight with appreciation.

“The Angel of New York,” I said, and everyone looked at me.

“You know,” Benny said, sounding almost crazed for a moment. “You know her.”

I shrugged. “I just said it. But, an angel, running around in the bushes?” I tried to force a laugh, and then took a moment to appreciate the calm that I’d been experiencing since seeing Grace.

“It was a she, and she was an angel,” my LF said sweetly, while num and nuts nodded in fawning agreement.

I stared into the bushes where she had vanished as another thought came to me. But I swear this time someone whispered it to me–

“Knowing has its price.”

—

(Photo by Bald Punk – Columbus Circle from Central Park South – click to expand)

First–

I promise over the weekend to take you one step deeper into the darkest secrets New York has to offer. I’ve been thinking about where to go next, and it came to me moments ago–

Me and you got to go back in time! Ok mofo. Hope you’re ready. I figure a few hundred years or so should do it.

This is the evolution of SECRETS OF NY starting with the first post:

      Episode Fourteen – August 2009

        THE IMMORTALS

–

I want you to know – NYC doesn’t give up its secrets all that easily, especially the dark ones. I’ll do my best.

Btw, can you believe The New York Historical Society is CLOSED for the summer! They’re doing renovations or some shit. They were closed just a few years ago by a fire or something . . . Hmmm. Anyway, the place rocks, big-time! I can’t wait to get my greasy paws all over their goods in September when they throw open their doors again to slumdogs like muah.

(Photo by Bald Punk – The New York Historical Society – click to expand)

Oh!!! Right now we’re in traffic on the FDR, headed for the Brooklyn Bridge. I’m typing on “my” brand new laptop. I got it at one of those big electronic stores last week. I will be paying for it along with my new video camera for quite some time.

Oh!!! Oh!!! The pizza delivery guy is driving!!!!!!

Yes, you heard that right. That’s why me and my lady friend (she would never admit to this) are in the back seat of our car.

You gotta see the pizza and Chinese delivery guys(aka num and nuts). I feel like I’m being chaffered by parakeets. That’s all I’ll say. They-are-whacked!

The pizza delivery guy drives okay so long as nobody honks a horn or does something stupid. My biggest fear is that if like a stupid dog or a cat runs in front of us, he’ll turn into on-coming traffic or straight into a pole. A little old lady he would mow down because he’s whacked, plain and simple.

But a dog or a cat–golden idols.

My lady friend is holding my dog, Scrappy Doodles. His butt is in her face ’cause, he’s scoping shit out the window. He’s the smartest dog ever. I bet he sees shit even people don’t. If he could drive, I would trust him before you know who.

These are the posts in which Scrappy D first appeared:

I swear, after the doctor smacked num and nuts on the ass he had to turn to their moms and say, your son is whacked!

Okay, so this weekend–big-time SECRETS will be coming your way. But be forewarned–

We see things in NYC that would blow your mind. What’s underneath it all . . . I haven’t gotten that far yet. I don’t have the absolute truth. All I have is more mystery.

Your bud,

P.S. We take Scrappy into Home Depot with us. He’s the coolest dog ever. I have a jacket that I hide him in. The employees don’t seem to mind anyway.

P.P.S.S. We’re going to the Home Depot in Park Slope. We live in uptown Manhattan.
